Saturday Painting

Hello friend! It's been a hot minute since I shared a blog post with you. To catch you up on a couple of things, I have been practicing with gouache and colored pencil a lot lately. This piece I'm sharing with you today was done with Reeves gouache and Prismacolor colored pencils inside my Archer & Olive sketchbook. I'm usually the type of artists that buys the cheap sketchbooks so I don't feel bad about "ruining" it with bad drawings. Occasionally I like to create final pieces of art in a fancier sketchbook. Can you count how many times I've said "sketchbook"?

Right now it's October and I'm following along with Shannon Snow's #creepycuteoctober prompts on Instagram. This drawing was for the prompt "Jack O'Lantern"

I am a huge fan of Procreate and Fresco right now and my favorite brushes are the gouache and HB pencil brushes on both applications. I thought it was about time I learned how to use gouache and colored pencils in real life! For the longest time I have been avoiding gouache. It never works the way I want it to, it's either too thick so I can't spread it or too watery so it looks like watercolor. But, the only way to learn something is to practice it over and over and over again!

The reason I'm proud of this piece is because I feel like I finally got a handle on gouache. I figured out the correct water/paint ratio and I didn't mess up on the itty bitty faces! Now, let's see if I can do it again...!
