April Journal

Updated: Jan 21

Let's talk about what's new in the world of Megan Shumway Illustration.

This spring I have really jumped into the video making game. I was a little hesitant before because I didn't have a conventional work space and I didn't think my digital process videos were very interesting. Making YouTube videos has always been on my list of "someday". I think with the recent inventions of TikTok and Reels it has given me the opportunity to dip my toe into the video sharing world without feeling the overwhelm of making an entire production.

Some easy video ideas that I started doing myself are

-Draw in sketchbook

-Timelapse video of drawing process

-Tidying my desk

-Gifs (these are easy to make on Procreate once you learn how)

-Videos clips from my daily walks/drives

I even started experimenting with new mediums such as acrylic on wooden eggs! These were fun to film timelapses of.

I recently started two new projects that have to do with stickers! I loved the idea of taking of these projects to break up the workload of children's books. Follow along on Instagram or Facebook to see when these become available!

We had a full week of 80 degree weather recently. It gave me a little glimmer of hope that summer and sunshine is indeed on its way! Though, since then, it has rained, snowed, AND hailed all in three days. April showers bring May flowers right?

Speaking of flowers. I planted zinnias. One dream I have had for the past two years is to start a U-Pick flower farm. Since I don't own any land right now I have been using an extra row in my grandma's vegetable garden to practice. I have two trays worth of pink and white zinnias planted and ready to go in the ground once the last danger of frost has passed! The goal with this project is to see how well I can grow the flowers and what I will need to have my own flower patch one day!

  1. The Lost Flowers of Alice Hart. This story follows Alice Hart through her dark childhood. She eventually ends up with her Grandmother who owns a flower farm in the Australian countryside. By learning the victorian language of flowers, Alice is able to uncover some deep family secrets.

  2. Bike rides. Since the snow has melted and the temperatures are at least above 40 degrees, I have started riding my bike again!

  3. Costco's Organic Coconut Bites. The perfect blend of chewy and coconut. I find myself sneaking one every time I go into the kitchen.
